So, um, I got an e-bike (a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) last week. AMA.

Some specs:

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! hub gear model (reduced max torque), “250 W” (it’s really more like 500, but European laws on electric power ratings are screwy like that), 50 Nm max torque, 120 RPM max assistance

500 Wh battery

Shimano Nexus 8-speed hub

Magura HS22 hydraulic rim brakes

Does it count as full suspension if it has a little internal front suspension in the steerer, and a seatpost suspension? Not much travel, but enough to absorb the bumps on the road and the bike trail. Especially when compared to the suspension-less tiny-wheeled !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in my last post...

Heavy AF - I think it’s something like 58 lbs with the battery? And that’s with an aluminum frame. Of course, it’s step-through, which doesn’t help, but hey, heavy is what you get with a Dutch bike.

Gotta say, though, when you’ve got like 500 watts helping you out, the 58 lbs disappears pretty quickly. And the Bosch software is excellent at feeling really natural, like it’s you just with super strength (until you hit about 19 MPH, and it starts cutting power as you approach the 20 MPH speed limiter...), with one exception - if you’re maneuvering at low speed in Turbo mode, it sometimes thinks you’re about to go , when you just wanted a little.

And yes, that rear fender clearance is wrong (I realized it was actually rubbing). I’ve fixed that just now.

That bike looks awesome, if a bit heavy. It’s to be expected with the step through frame, full fenders and chain guard, and the big 500Wh battery.

Though for an extra $650...

Sweet. Here’s a potato of mine:

Qulbix Raptor 140.

72v 20ah Lipo. QS205 v3 motor. Adaptto Max E controller. Puts out 14kw, or a bit under 19hp. In boost mode it will throw the front wheel towards the sky. Haven’t attempted a top speed run yet, but can verify it’ll hit 70kph in a hurry. Not that I ride it that fast around town. 32kph speed limit for ebikes here, so I tend to keep it around that speed. Get around 50km per charge whether I pedal or not. Takes around an hour to charge, though I can crank up the amperage and get that down to 45 min or so if the outlet will support it.

Love this thing. Have put around 2k km on it this summer.

I’ve only ridden on e-bike. I was at a farmers market and ancompany that provides mobility options for the elderly had one on display, and test rides.

Even tho it wasn’t a powerful bike I was surprised just how much fun it was.It was a 250w, step thought comfort bike with 20x4.5” tires. And I’ve been thinking about getting one ever since. There’s a company called Swytch bike that sells conversion kits with a front hub motor, a cadence meter, and a battery pack that attaches to the handle bars, you can also get a pure throttle if you dint want to pedal at all . I’ve been thinking about getting that for my wife and putting it in her old yellow Huffy timuberline.

One thing is that “250 W” is rarely 250 W - a lot of manufacturers claim their systems are 250 W, and that may be true that they can only make 250 W without overheating running at full power for half an hour, the European definition of continuous power. In practice, they make a lot more than that.

I will also say... cadence sensing seems like it’d be really unnatural to try to ride, and I’d want a throttle if the only pedal assist sensing was cadence. (The Bosch system I have, as well as the other European-style systems (there’s a few out there - Shimano STEPS, Brose’s systems, the Yamaha PW line, and then a few proprietary systems here and there) uses torque sensing, without any support for a throttle (they’re banned in Europe and Japan unless it’s registered as a moped).)

I’d strongly suggest avoiding front drive bikes, for a variety of reasons. They’re easier to cobble together, but they’re generally a bad idea. Front wheelspin on loose ground will take you out, and they have a habit of causing fork failure, among other issues.

I’d stick to a rear hub or a mid drive for your conversion. Tons of hubbie options out there if you do some searching, and the bafang bbs02 or bbshd are good choices if you’d like to send the power through the chain and to the rear cassette. Worth considering if you have hills to contend with.
